Animal transfer brings close to 60 Northern dogs to Ontario from remote Manitoba communities

STOUFFVILLE, Ontario, Sept. 19, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- After travelling thousands of kilometres, a group of 59 dogs from remote communities in Manitoba have arrived at Ontario SPCA Animal Centres across the province to find new homes through the Year of the Northern Dog program.

After a stopover in Sudbury on Monday evening, the dogs were transferred to Ontario SPCA Animal Centres in Muskoka, Barrie, Orillia, Midland, Orangeville, Brockville, Cornwall, Napanee, Pembroke and Stouffville.  Once they have received the necessary vaccinations, health checks, and are spayed or neutered, they will be placed up for adoption.

In addition to the vision of the leadership in the communities, which are located near the Ontario-Manitoba border, the transfer was made possible thanks to K9 Advocates and Earthdog’s REASON Initiative, which gathered the dogs and worked together to transport them to Winnipeg. From there, volunteers and partnering animal welfare organizations, including Northern Legacy Horse Farm, which transported the dogs aboard its “Bark Bus,” helped the dogs on the next leg of their journey.

To bring awareness, attention and action to Northern dog overpopulation, the Ontario SPCA has declared 2018 the Year of the Northern Dog. In response to many caring and compassionate Northern communities, the Ontario SPCA and its partners have developed a network of individuals, organizations and communities aimed at bringing awareness to the issue and working alongside Northern communities with a common goal – to change lives.

“Many barriers exist in the North that do not exist in the South,” says Daryl Vaillancourt, Senior Director, Humane Programming & Community Outreach. “The Ontario SPCA and its animal welfare partners are working together to find homes for dogs and to bring much-needed wellness services and supplies to remote communities.”
