KITCHENER, ON, May 10, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) --

Highlights:

  • Waterloo Brewing was awarded a $477,561 SMART Green grant in 2018.
  • SMART Green grants support investment in technology and process improvements of Ontario-based businesses that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase productivity.
  • Waterloo Brewing is the only brewer to have been awarded a SMART Green grant.

Waterloo Brewing, the trade name of Brick Brewing Co. Limited (“Brick” or the “Company”) (TSX: BRB), today announced it was awarded a SMART Green grant to support an investment in new beer pasteurization equipment that will further reduce the brewery’s already leading environmental footprint.

“Almost three years ago we made an unprecedented commitment to environmental stewardship,” declared George Croft, President and CEO, Waterloo Brewing. “When we installed our new brewhouse in 2015 it reduced our thermal energy consumption by 52%, electricity by 33%, water consumption by over 50% and wastewater generation by over 50%, all while increasing our output by 300%. At that point, we became one of the greenest brewhouses in all of North America. With this new beer pasteurization equipment, we will be further reducing our natural gas consumption by the equivalent of 23 tonnes of C02 emissions annually.”

The purpose of the SMART Green program is to support investments in technology and process improvements by Ontario manufacturers which result in greenhouse gas emissions intensity reductions and/or avoidance through upgrades to process/production equipment, deliver energy efficiency and lead to productivity improvements.

“CME is pleased to support the significant achievements of Waterloo Brewing and congratulates them on their commitment to reducing their carbon footprint. Through the SMART Green funding program, Waterloo Brewing was awarded $477,561 toward the implementation of a new tunnel pasteurizer that will reduce their natural gas consumption and lessen the GHG impact by almost 23 tonnes annually. This is an important contribution and a step forward in Ontario’s Climate Change Action Plan to transition to a low-carbon economy. Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters is proud to deliver the SMART program which continues to promote manufacturers’ business growth and competitiveness.” said Dennis A. Darby, President & CEO, Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters.

“We are proud to be Ontario’s First Craft Brewer and the legacy of leadership that carries,” continued Croft. “With the SMART Green fund matching our investment of $477,561, we are fiercely proud of another industry first.  The time has come for businesses to take our planet’s environmental stewardship seriously and we’re proud to lead the pack.”
