Northeast Regional Council of Carpenters’ Local 177 Council Representative Hank Sorensen Appointed to Serve on the Workers’ Compensation and Benefits Oversight Committee

ANNAPOLIS, Md., Feb. 06, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- On January 18th, Hank Sorensen, a Council Representative for the Northeast Regional Council of Carpenters (NRCC), was selected by the Maryland President of the Senate and Speaker of the House of Delegates to serve on the Workers’ Compensation and Benefits Oversight Committee. Sorensen will be one of 16 people who sit on the committee.

Located in Annapolis, Maryland, the Workers’ Compensation Oversight and Benefits Committee is tasked with evaluating and examining the structure of workers' compensation and benefits throughout the state. The committee plays a key role in analyzing existing State legislation, enforcing insurance compliance, defining average weekly wage rates and determining funds allocated for personal disability.

The Workers’ Compensation and Benefits Oversight Committee generally meets twice a year to advocate for important workers’ rights. Each board member is responsible for providing a detailed status report on pending
items and progress made for workers in the region.

During his first meeting on February 26th, the committee plans to discuss various workers’ compensation legislation that has been introduced during this session including: Permanent Partial Disability for State Correctional Officers (HB-0205 and SB-0048); Average Weekly Wage – Multiple Employers (HB-0484); and Students in Unpaid Work-Based Learning Experiences (SB-0403).

“I am extremely honored to be appointed to the Workers’ Compensation and Benefits Oversight Committee,” said Sorensen. “I am excited to add another layer of labor experience to the board, address important issues such as wage theft and help influence the passage of important workers’ rights legislation to ensure fair wages for all middle-class workers.”

Sorensen’s new position will build on the NRCC’s efforts to advocate for workers and combat pertinent issues in the region’s construction industry. He also plans to use his new role as a platform to advance the Council’s position in the marketplace and make NRCC contractors more competitive.
