Lumenari Selected for DoD SBIR Awards

Materials Discovery Company, Lumenari, Wins Two US DoD SBIR Phase I Awards

Lexington, June 14, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Lumenari was recently selected for two Phase I awards in the United States Department of Defense (DoD) Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) Program 17.1 Broad Agency Announcement.

The SBIR program is a highly competitive program that encourages domestic small businesses to engage in research and development (R&D). By including qualified small businesses in the nation's R&D arena, high-tech innovation is stimulated and the U.S. gains entrepreneurial spirit as it meets its specific R&D needs. The mission of the SBIR program is to support scientific excellence and technological innovation through the investment of Federal research funds in critical priorities.

“We are proud to have been selected for these SBIR awards, and we look forward to working with the DoD,” said Rob Nordsell, CEO of Lumenari. “These projects are anticipated to start in August 2017 and progress into Phase II by June 2018. These awards are an integral part of our strategic development plan where we continue to grow our capabilities, intellectual property, and customer community.”

For the first SBIR award, Lumenari will be involved in the discovery and development of novel compositions for wideband transmissive windows used in infrared countermeasure systems. Lumenari will develop an array of deep eutectic solvents for use as electrolytes in extreme environment supercapacitors for the second SBIR award.

“Lumenari continues to be at the forefront of advanced materials research and development,” said Robert Brevelle, Corporate Advisor of Lumenari and Managing Director of Startup Evo. “Lumenari’s talented physicists, solid state chemists, and results-oriented management team have an exceptional track record in R&D as well as in meeting the strategic needs of their customers. These SBIR awards for ceramic materials and robust electrolytes build upon their innovative and technological foundation.”

Since its inception in 2013, Lumenari has received over $4 million in government contracts from the National Science Foundation, U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Department of Defense, and the State of Kentucky. These contracts focus on the further development of solid state materials that combined, have a market size of over $500 million.
