EnergySolutions Hails Milestone on DOE Start-Up of Conversion Plant at Piketon

SALT LAKE CITY, UT--(Marketwire - June 3, 2010) -  EnergySolutions Inc. (NYSE: ES), as the managing partner for Uranium Disposition Services (UDS), marked the commencement of the initial operation of the DUF6 Conversion Facility at the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant.

EnergySolutions, working closely with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), took control of the project in 2007 to manage the operational reviews and construction, completing the project within budget and ahead of schedule. Working closely with AREVA NP Inc. and Burns and Roe Enterprises, the work involved managing the operational reviews and construction. The facilities will be used to convert DOE inventory of depleted uranium hexafluoride (DUF6) into a stable form for beneficial use, re-use and/or disposal.

"This is a significant milestone for the U.S Department of Energy," said Val Christensen, President and CEO of EnergySolutions. "I want to congratulate all who made this day possible constructing this facility with an impressive safety record. As the resurgence of nuclear power as a base load source of energy in the United States builds, the DUF6 project demonstrates the continued commitment to ensure responsible management of the nuclear fuel cycle in the United States."

Once the facility is in full operation, it will provide an estimated 150 full-time jobs in the area involving plant operations and maintenance, engineering and support functions. The facilities constructed at the site consist of a 64,000 square-foot process building that houses the majority of the conversion equipment, a warehouse, administration building and several small support buildings.

EnergySolutions offers customers a full range of integrated services and solutions, including nuclear operations, characterization, decommissioning, decontamination, site closure, transportation, nuclear materials management, processing, recycling, and disposition of nuclear waste, and research and engineering services across the nuclear fuel cycle.
