Studsvik waste treating Finnish heat exchangers

Studsvik has signed an agreement with the Finnish nuclear power plant TVO for
treatment and recycling of end-of-life heat exchangers. The order value is about
SEK 25 million.

"We see interest from an increasing number of countries in treatment of low and
medium-level metallic material instead of direct disposal. Our environmentally
responsible and cost-effective methods of dealing with large components meet
with particular interest," says Leif Andersson, head of Studsvik's segment
Sweden.

With Studsvik's treatment concept it is usually possible to free release and
recycle 80-90 per cent of the metals in components, which both reduces storage
costs and environmental impact.

To date Studsvik has treated end-of-life components from both Sweden and other
countries and in 2009 contracted to treat about 3,200 tonnes of components from
Canada.

The Finnish heat exchangers, weighing in total about 700 tonnes, are to be
treated in 2010 and 2011. Residual products from the treatment will be sent back
to Finland for final storage.
