Rovi and Samsung Align Technologies to Enhance Music Discovery for Portable Devices

Samsung Boosts Music Stores and Mobile Phones Worldwide With Rovi's Music Data and LASSO Solutions

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Feb. 9, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Rovi Corporation (Nasdaq:ROVI) announced today that Samsung will use Rovi's media recognition technologies to facilitate finding and purchasing content in its PC Applications worldwide. Samsung has signed an agreement with Rovi for the use of both its music metadata and LASSO media recognition solutions.

The amount of content, including popular and specialized music, available digitally is on the constant up rise making it harder for consumers to find and purchase the content that they want. Samsung has selected Rovi's rich descriptive music metadata to help consumers easily find more content on Samsung Music Shop, upgrading the consumer experience.

Samsung has also chosen Rovi's LASSO media recognition solution for Samsung PC Applications provided with Samsung-branded mobile phones. By deploying LASSO in its PC Applications, Samsung is able to develop customizable and localized products that can identify media collections and deliver descriptive music data from Rovi's current AMG editorial database of more than 1.8 million pop and classical music albums and 16 million tracks.

"It's essential for us to offer our customers unprecedented quality in all of their experiences with Samsung's products," said Dr. Hosoo Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of the Media Solution Center at Samsung Electronics. "Rovi's music data richness and depth of content on albums, artists and songs enable us to provide a highly personalized experience and keep us up to pace with the constant change in music entertainment."

"As one of largest consumer electronics and handset makers in the world, Samsung is dedicated to providing engaging innovative and interactive digital entertainment experiences for its customers, and we're pleased to be part of that," said Tom Carson, EVP of Worldwide Sales & Service at Rovi Corporation. "This announcement underscores the value that our data and technology solutions provide to our digital entertainment customers globally."

Rovi's music data is enhanced by extensive relational links that enable deep discovery and navigation, providing a personalized music experience. Its LASSO solution seamlessly integrates advanced identification tools with access to Rovi's entertainment database.
