Kaplan Publishing Launches Two TOEFL(R) Applications for the iPhone(R) and iPod Touch(R)

New Apps Help Students From Around the Globe Learn English Vocabulary and Idioms

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - April 23, 2009) - For foreign students looking to earn a prestigious degree at an American college, mastering English is an important step in the admissions process. To help facilitate this journey, Kaplan Publishing is releasing two new mobile applications, TOEFL Vocabulary Flashcards and TOEFL Idioms Flashcards. The TOEFL, Test of English as a Foreign Language, is the most widely accepted English language test in North America, and Kaplan is the first global education publisher to launch robust TOEFL mobile applications.

The TOEFL apps, which work on both the iPhone and iPod Touch, are for students here and abroad who want to improve and expand their grasp of English vocabulary and idioms prior to taking the exam. The applications were developed in partnership with TestPrepWiz (www.testprepwiz.com) and are available for $4.99 each from the iTunes' App Store. Users may try a "lite" version of each app for free then upgrade to the full apps directly from the free versions.

"With the release of our TOEFL apps, Kaplan is providing mobile learning for our international, college-bound students precisely where they want it -- everywhere they find themselves with some time for study," said Jennifer Farthing, executive director, business development at Kaplan Publishing.

Since January the test prep materials pioneer has released five other mobile applications for the iPhone, helping make the device a useful study tool. Those apps include GRE® Exam Vocabulary Flashcards, Medical Terms for Nurses, Math for Nurses, NCLEX-RN® Medications Flashcards, and SAT® Flashcubes.

The TOEFL Vocabulary Flashcards app contains more than 350 words -- from "ambiguous" to "stoic" -- which students need to know for TOEFL test success. The words are used in context via sample sentences, and parts of speech are included to help users comprehend meaning and remember proper usage.

Likewise, the TOEFL Idioms Flashcards app includes more than 350 commonly used phrases, such as "to draw a blank," "back to square one," and "on the right track." Because idioms make no literal sense, they can be particularly challenging for ESL students.

Both applications include professionally recorded audio pronunciations of all the words, definitions, and sample sentences to hone listening and speaking skills. Users of the apps can customize their learning experience by excluding from their focused study the words and phrases they already know, allowing for more intensive review of less familiar words and terms.
