WASHINGTON, DC--(Marketwire - March 12, 2009) - Jeffrey S. Bucholtz, formerly the Acting
Assistant Attorney General and Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General
for the Civil Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, will return to
King & Spalding as a partner in its national appellate practice on March
16, 2009.
Wick Sollers, managing partner of King & Spalding's Washington, D.C.,
office, commented, "Jeff's return after six years at the Department of
Justice will strengthen our growing appellate practice. His outstanding
legal skill, combined with his significant enforcement experience at
the Civil Division, enhances the firm's capacity to provide comprehensive
advice to our clients on a broad range of appellate issues."
Bucholtz left King & Spalding in 2002 to join the Justice Department.
During his tenure at the Department, he handled and supervised a broad
range of sensitive cases for the federal government, including
administrative law cases, national security cases, suits challenging the
constitutionality of federal statutes and regulations, criminal and civil
enforcement matters and a wide variety of important matters for his client,
the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. During his service as Acting
Assistant Attorney General, he managed over 800 lawyers.
In his time at the DOJ, Bucholtz argued 20 cases in the federal and state
appellate courts, including the Valerie Plame Wilson v. Libby civil tort
case in the D.C. Circuit and Mylan v. FDA in the Fourth Circuit. He also
played an instrumental role in a number of important government cases in
District Court, including Mayfield v. United States and Hatfill v.
Ashcroft.
"My time at the Department of Justice could not have been more rewarding,
but I am thrilled to rejoin my former colleagues at King & Spalding in its
national appellate practice," said Bucholtz.
Bucholtz graduated summa cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania and
received his law degree, magna cum laude, from Harvard Law School.
Following his graduation from law school he clerked for U.S. District Court
Judge Stephen Wilson in the Central District of California and Justice
Samuel Alito, then-U.S. Circuit Court Judge for the Third Circuit.
King & Spalding's national appellate practice is headed by former U.S.
Solicitor General Paul D. Clement. Clement has argued 49 cases before the
Supreme Court of the United States.
"I worked with Jeff both at the Justice Department and at King & Spalding
before we both joined the Department. Jeff impressed every lawyer with whom
he worked at the Department and throughout the government with his legal
talents and his impeccable judgment. Getting Jeff to rejoin me at King &
Spalding is a great development for our appellate practice," said Clement.
