SourceForge Implements OpenID Technology

SourceForge.net Launches Standard-Setting Implementation

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., May 7, 2008 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- SourceForge(r) (Nasdaq:LNUX), the leader in community-driven media and e-commerce, today announced inclusion of the OpenID functionality in their SourceForge.net website. OpenID is an open, decentralized, framework for digital identity that eliminates the need for multiple usernames across different websites. SourceForge.net users can now log in with an OpenID and receive a corresponding SourceForge.net identity for use at other sites that support OpenID logins.

"SourceForge.net is, at its core, about breaking down barriers and having the technology get out of the way. OpenID fits into that idea really well, both technically and philosophically," says Jeff Bates, SourceForge, Vice President of Platform. "The OpenID technology is open source and has gained incredible traction against some big proprietary alternatives based on its reliability and ease-of-use. Our users have asked for it specifically."

The size of SourceForge.net's deployment, affecting over 170,000 open source projects and 1.8 million users, makes this a standard-setting integration for wide OpenID adoption.

"It's great that SourceForge is implementing OpenID on such a broad scale, and doing it in an appropriate way. By being one of the largest websites to accept identities from other providers, they are taking full advantage of what OpenID has to offer their users," says Scott Kveton, Chair, OpenID Foundation. "Having SourceForge embrace OpenID is really exciting, and a clear indication of how popular and widespread OpenIDs have become."

Along with integrating the OpenID technology, SourceForge has joined the OpenID Foundation. The OpenID Foundation was formed to encourage the growth of OpenID by providing a legal entity to be the steward for its community, needed infrastructure and by generally helping to promote and support expanded adoption of OpenID.
