BOSTON, MA--(Marketwire - March 5, 2008) - A new research report on "Trusted Computing"
published by Aberdeen Group, a Harte-Hanks Company (
NYSE:
HHS), reveals
that organizations that have deployed applications based on trusted
computing infrastructure exhibit superior capabilities in security
governance, risk management and compliance compared to other respondents.
The term "trusted computing" refers to applications that leverage
hardware-based "roots of trust" at the edge of the network and at the
endpoints -- sometimes referred to as "hardware anchors in a sea of
untrusted software" -- for higher assurance.
Traditional security solutions are based on a "detect and defend" model, in
which the general approach is to identify what's bad as quickly as possible
and to try to prevent the bad events from happening. Evolving threats,
malware, mis-configurations and patches keep most companies on a
never-ending treadmill of updates and "Patch Tuesdays." In contrast,
trusted computing solutions are based on a "high assurance" model, where
the general approach is that once "healthy" behavior has been defined, all
variants are deemed "unhealthy" and are not allowed.
"The research shows that a high percentage of trusted computing-ready
devices and infrastructure already exists within the enterprise, but
overall awareness about the benefits of trusted computing is relatively
low," said Derek E. Brink, vice president and research director for IT
Security, Aberdeen. "The most compelling finding from this study is that
users who have activated their existing trusted computing infrastructure
actually have superior capabilities at security governance, risk management
and compliance."
