Alere Medical Chooses RTX Healthcare for the Development and Manufacturing of the Wireless DayLink Remote Patient Monitor

NOERRESUNDBY, Denmark, Nov. 7, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- Today, Alere(R) Medical Incorporated and RTX Healthcare announced an agreement that will be of significance to the healthcare industry. Alere Medical, the leading specialty disease management company, and RTX Healthcare, a leading developer and OEM manufacturer of wireless telehealth solutions, will join forces on a new and revolutionary wireless DayLink(R) monitor.

In the near future, Alere Medical will launch the wireless DayLink monitor. It is an easy-to-use device enabling the reading and transmission of objective patient information such as blood pressure, blood glucose and weight. The wireless DayLink monitor can also collect symptomatic information, for instance on a patient's shortness of breath. In addition, it is interactive and flexible covering various patient needs such as instant messaging and medication reminders. Last but not least, it is wireless and ensures secure data transmission.

"The wireless DayLink monitor is part of our in-home remote monitoring program that improves the quality of life of patients with chronic diseases, offering them the security of knowing that nurses are monitoring their health," says Gordon Norman, MD, MBA, and the Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of Alere Medical. Installed in the patient's home, the wireless DayLink monitor will collect patient information and use the patient's phone line and the global Internet to transmit the data to Alere Medical's proprietary database. "It is our means to provide physicians with empirical and actionable information. Moreover, thanks to its interface, the wireless DayLink monitor embraces a significant number of patient diseases. The fact that it is dynamic and interactive in form and function makes it a proactive as well as personalized media."

"For the development of the wireless DayLink monitor, we chose RTX Healthcare on the basis of several criteria but first and foremost because of their cutting edge technology and strong expertise in wireless device engineering. Moreover, we were looking for a full product supplier, and on this point, RTX Healthcare stood out from the other players. Apart from this, the price was naturally also an important criterion, and RTX turned out to be competitive on this question," Dr. Norman said.

"We are pleased to enter into this contract with Alere Medical and to offer them our expertise in wireless medical device engineering," says Bjarne Flou, Managing Director of RTX Healthcare. "Telehealth is a rapidly growing market, and we see more and more well-established companies like Alere Medical partnering up with suppliers of complementary technology. This agreement reflects each of our respective strengths, and we are pleased that RTX can make a difference in this project. The final goal is to provide the complete and most competitive solution to the market".
