Northrop Grumman Awarded Contract to Upgrade Ship Electronic Warfare System

HOLLYWOOD, Md., July 18, 2002 (PRIMEZONE) -- Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) will give the U.S. Navy surface fleet's AN/SLQ-32A(V) electronic warfare systems a modern, commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) upgrade that also accommodates future improvements.

A $5.8 million contract for electronic warfare systems contains three options that, if exercised, would bring the total cumulative contract value to over $22 million.

The Crane Division, Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Indiana, selected Northrop Grumman Integrated Systems' Airborne Early Warning and Electronic Warfare (AEW&EW) Systems business area to design, develop, fabricate, test and deliver four AN/SLQ-32A(V) Electronic Surveillance Enhancement (ESE) units. The ESE units will utilize modern COTS technology to the maximum extent possible to update the digital processing and digital tracking units of the AN/SLQ-32A(V) electronic warfare system. The AN-SLQ-32(V) is the primary electronic warfare system installed onboard all U.S. Navy ships. It evaluates the electromagnetic environment, identifies radar-guided threats, initiates countermeasures and alerts the operators and combat system. Work will be performed in AEW&EW Systems' PRB Systems site in Goleta, Calif., and is expected to be completed by June 2007.

"This effort opens the architecture of the SLQ-32(V) so that major systems enhancements can be undertaken that will vastly improve the operational capability of the system," said Lawrence Schadegg, president of PRB Systems.

Northrop Grumman Integrated Systems, headquartered in Dallas, Texas, is a premier aerospace systems integration enterprise. Integrated Systems has the capabilities to design, develop, integrate, produce and support complete systems, as well as airframe subsystems, for airborne surveillance and battle management, early warning, airborne electronic warfare and air combat aircraft.
