Nokia chosen by leading ceramics company to protect its global corporate network

April 23, 2002 : Royal Scandinavia, one of the world's leading art industry groups, has successfully deployed Nokia's IP network security appliances to protect its global network.

Established in 1775, Royal Scandinavia's stable of ceramics brands contains the trade names Royal Copenhagen, Georg Jensen, Orrefors, Kosta Boda, Boda Nova, and Holmegaard. The company has its headquarters in Copenhagen, Denmark with production facilities in Denmark and Sweden, and sales offices across the globe, with points of presence in all the major countries.

With a rapidly expanding global network, Royal Scandinavia came to the conclusion that it needed to deploy a virtual private network (VPN) to secure its valuable production, sales and marketing data and to ensure safe access to those where necessary.

Flemming Bach, Royal Scandinavia's IT manager, says: "For us, it's all about uptime as we continue to expand our WAN and fully roll-out production and supply chain applications to new users in the group. We can't afford to allow our network to go down at all, and the security solutions offered by Nokia through reseller Ezenta give us peace of mind."

Bach adds: "We hadn't previously adopted a combined VPN solution, although we had conducted trials using rivals but they simply didn't work in the way we needed them to. The solutions from Nokia are not only very secure, they are also very flexible and scalable to work with."

Royal Scandinavia has protected its centralised VPN hub at its main Copenhagen IT site in Denmark using two high performance-fault tolerant IP650 IP network security appliances from Nokia, which combine the best of breed FireWall-1(TM) and VPN-1(TM) software from Check Point Software Technologies (NASDAQ : CHKP). This security system protects a 34Mb fibre Internet connection pipe and a 4Mb back-up connection.

The company estimates around a third of the company's 3,500 staff will be taking advantage of the new VPN, created with a particular emphasis on sales and production knowledge management.

Nokia is also protecting other location networks with its market-leading IP network security appliances. These include two production locations in Sweden, which sees a site in Orrefors operating two mid-range IP400 Series network security appliances managing a 4Mb Internet connection, and the site at Malmo using two IP300 Series network security appliances to guard a 2Mb Internet connection.

Other locations taking advantage of Nokia's IP security solutions include one in the US which is protected by IP300 Series network appliances, in Germany running IP100 Series network security appliances, and another in Norway also using the Nokia IP100 Series platform. Bach says other locations using Nokia security technology will be added in the future.

Ernie Jones, Nokia Internet Communications vice president of sales, Europe, Middle East & Africa, adds, "Operations of such a multinational organisation depend on excellent communications. Nokia is committed to delivering the highest standards in security and performance and we are proud to have enabled Royal Scandinavia to provide secure business systems to its staff."
