Nokia to provide a TETRA network for the Water Conservancy Bureau of Tianjin, China

Nokia and the Shanghai Machinery Complete Equipment (Group) Corp. of China have signed a contract for the supply of an 800 MHz TETRA mobile digital radio communication system for the Water Conservancy Bureau in the city of Tianjin. The agreement represents the first sale of a Nokia 800 MHz TETRA network in mainland China.

The network provided under the agreement will be used in a project undertaken by the Tianjin Water Conservancy Bureau to provide digital trunking telecommunications for the city's flood-control information system. The network will cover the city of Tianjin and its suburbs. In addition to voice traffic, the network will provide data communications for the automated collection and handling of water-resource telemetry data, in conjunction with the Bureau's signal conditioning and data acquisition (SCADA) system.

Under the agreement, Nokia will supply one Nokia DXT fault-tolerant exchange and 15 Nokia TETRA base stations, as well as a dispatching workstation and a number of TETRA terminals. The Shanghai Machinery Complete Equipment (Group) Corp. has been contracted to buy and import the TETRA infrastructure. Implementation will be carried out by Shanghai Posts & Telecommunications Equipment Co., Ltd.

The Tianjin Water Conservancy Bureau has joined the Nokia TWISP (TETRA Wireless Service Partner) partner program and will develop its own data application based on the Nokia TETRA platform by using the Nokia open application programming interface (API).

"The TETRA network we are supplying will not only provide highly efficient voice communications, but also the data communication required by the Tianjin Water Conservancy Bureau to further develop its data information system," said Topi Kinnunen, Director of Nokia Professional Mobile Radio China. "Nokia is pleased to have worked closely with our Chinese partners to bring about this important entry into the TETRA market in China for Nokia. This milestone also shows that TETRA technology has been spreading fast in China and has been readily adopted by Chinese customers and government departments."

TETRA networks offer secure, digital mobile communication for public safety and security organizations, transportation and utility companies. Nokia is the first vendor in the world to have launched IP packet capability for TETRA. The new Nokia TETRA 800 MHz system was first unveiled at the PT/Expo Comm China 2000 exhibition in Beijing in October. The Nokia TWISP program provides information on data services and interfaces that allow software houses to smoothly integrate new applications for TETRA networks.
