5 Critical Changes to the LED Lighting Facts Program

TÜV SÜD America’s Atlanta lab is on the Approved Lab List for the LED Lighting Facts Program (LLFP), offering guidance on the changes made since the program shutdown on April 30th.

Peabody, MA, July 12, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The LLFP product label showcases performance results according to established industry standards such as IES LM-79-08. In 2009, the voluntary program introduced transparency and accuracy in the reporting of product performance. Retailers and consumers have become accustomed to having easy access to photometric performance results on a product label such as light output in lumens, lumens per watt, color rendering index, color temperature and warranty.  After 10 successful years, the DOE closed the program. For several months manufacturers were unsure if the colorful and popular label should continue to be used.  In May of 2018, the LLFP resumed acceptance of LED lighting products under the direction of D+R International, the implementer of the program since its inception.

Five critical changes introduced in the resurrected program:

  • Lamps are back! Types of lamps include: linear replacement lamps, mogul screw base products and pin based products
  • Categories updated in response to market influences
  • Existing listed products now considered “Legacy products” maintained
  • 18 Labs currently approved including TUV SUD’s Atlanta lab
  • LLFP review times reduced; 5 business days

In addition to the upgrades listed above, the LLFP now requires a listing maintenance fee. These fees are based on the cumulative number of products that are added to a manufacturer’s account over time. Manufacturers can now choose unlimited product submissions for less than $10,000 per year, and while this is a significant amount of money, the most cost-efficient path should be carefully considered in advance. TÜV SÜD can help a manufacturer assess their current listings and potential for future growth and determine the best option.
