Series of SMS.ac Polls Show Shift in SMS Use; SMS Use is on Rise Within World's Largest Mobile Community

SAN DIEGO, Aug. 27, 2002 (PRIMEZONE) -- A recent poll solicited by SMS.ac, Inc. (www.sms.ac) indicates that a greater number of text messages (SMS) are being received than were four months ago. More than 11% of the 34,277 respondents to the August 8 SMS.ac poll said they currently receive more than 30 text messages on their wireless devices each day. This number is up from April, when a similar poll put that number at approximately 5%.

38.2% of those surveyed on August 8 say they continue to receive five or fewer SMS per day, as compared to 57.2% in April. But, nearly 34.5% now claim to receive between six and 30 SMS in a typical 24-hour period. And 8.6% of those polled remarked that they receive in excess of 50 text messages each day. SMS.ac polls its growing global community of more than 6 million members daily on a variety of topics related to their wireless world. For a look at today's SMS.ac poll, visit www.sms.ac.

"Monthly site metrics demonstrate that SMS use is on the rise," said Michael Pousti, chairman and chief executive officer of SMS.ac. "People around the world continue to discover the anywhere, joy of wireless communications--with acquaintances and also with strangers."

In an August 19 poll, SMS.ac members and visitors to the site (www.sms.ac) were asked if they wanted to receive SMS messages from people they did not know. Out of more than 37,000 respondents, 68% stated they were open to receiving messages from strangers, while 21.6% registered an opposing point-of-view. 10.4% were unsure.

Is anonymity foremost on the minds of those sending text messages? Apparently, it is not. Asked on August 21 if it was okay to make their city or country visible to others when chatting or exchanging SMS, the vast majority of 49,932 poll participants responded affirmatively (82.6%). Only 21.6% wished to remain invisible, while the remainder said they were unsure.
