Carrier1 to Offer Secure, Network Based IP VPNs Using Nortel Networks Solution

Plans to Provide Range of Value Added IP Services to Enterprise, ISP, and ASP Customers

LONDON, April 24, 2001 (PRIMEZONE) -- Pan-European service provider Carrier1 [Nasdaq:CONE) (Neuer Markt:CJN) has selected a managed solution from Nortel Networks(1) (NYSE:NT) (TSE:NT] as the platform for its secure, next generation, network-based VPN (Virtual Private Network) service portfolio. With Nortel Networks Shasta(1) 5000 Broadband Service Node (BSN), Carrier1 can deliver a range of value-added IP (Internet Protocol) services to new and existing enterprise, ISP (Internet Service Provider) and ASP (Application Service Provider) customers.

Carrier1 plans to initially deploy Nortel Networks Shasta 5000 BSN in the UK, Germany, Holland, France, US and Belgium, with plans for future expansion into Scandinavia, Italy, Spain, Switzerland and Austria. "IP VPN's are increasingly recognized as required for the deployment of Internet value added or mission critical network services. IP VPN's provide a secure, feature rich and cost effective platform for a modern enterprise, whether they be a manufacturing company or E-Commerce company," said Dominic McGlinchey, Head of IPVPN

Services of Carrier1

"With the only ICSA (International Computer Security Association) certified, network-based firewall, Shasta 5000 BSN combines the cost-effectiveness and ease of deployment of IP VPN's with the highest level of security required for corporate intranets and VPN's," said McGlinchey. "Because of the central, software-based provisioning, hundreds of different firewalls are easily created to match the needs of various customer applications."

"Service providers need networks and services that can deliver real, differentiated, value-added services," said Malcolm Collins, president, next generation service providers, Nortel Networks. "With Nortel Networks Shasta 5000 BSN, Carrier1 will have a truly integrated platform that can flexibly and economically support network-based firewalls and other, value-added IP services for tens of thousands of subscribers."

Nortel Networks Shasta 5000 BSN is designed to power the subscriber edge of the network, where 'first mile' technologies like DSL meet the Internet backbone and where broadband subscribers meet broadband services and content. Shasta 5000 BSN provides a universal aggregation point with capability to support wholesale dial, DSL, fixed and mobile wireless, metro optical and Ethernet extension, ATM/frame relay, and leased line subscribers. It enables inter-exchange carriers (IXC's), incumbent local exchange carriers (ILEC's), competitive local exchange carriers (CLEC's), alternative operators (AO's), and ISP's to increase competitive advantage by transitioning from the simple connectivity model enabled by first generation subscriber management systems to a cost-effective, network-based, valued-added broadband services model. Combined with Nortel Networks CVX(1) 1800(1) dial-up platform, Shasta 5000 BSN allows service providers in wholesale and retail environments to capitalize on existing access technologies while smoothly migrating toward broadband networks at the point-of-presence.
